What is Athletic Therapy?

Athletic Therapy is a healthcare profession that specializes in the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal (i.e. bones, muscles and joints) disorders - especially as they relate to individuals with active lifestyles. Athletic therapists assess and directly treat injuries as well as assist patients through a rehabilitation process specifically tailored to the individual for optimal recovery time and successful injury recovery.  Athletic Therapists provide an active treatment program with patients.

An Athletic Therapist takes time with their patients to explain and educate them on their related injury.  By educating the patient throughout this process, both recovery time and the risk of re-injury are reduced while the patient leaves each session better informed.

What to expect when you see an Atheletic Therapist:

The first visit with the Athletic Therapist is the initial assessment.  This is conducted to determine the nature of the injury (i.e. sprain, repetitive strain, bursitis, etc.) and the cause of the injury. Based upon this assessment, the therapist will be able to determine the best course of action to both promote healing while speeding the patient’s return to active daily living activities pain free.

Therapeutic Techniques utilized by the Athletic Therapist during treatment include:

  • Manual “hands on” techniques
  • Therapeutic Modalities (laser, heat, ice, ultrasound, electrical therapy)
  • Stretching and Strengthening programs
  • Proprioception – balance retraining
  • Postural Correctional Training
  • Soft Tissue Mobilization
  • Supportive Taping and Bracing Techniques
